You see a lot on Instagram about people making millions just working on social media and it can be done. However, I guarantee when you look at their account and all their tips and tricks, they are probably selling a course ‘so you can do it too’ for thousands of dollars.
Don’t buy it, not worth it.
Now I can’t personally say I’ve ever bought one of these ‘courses’ but it is likely I’d be wasting my money, because I doubt these people bought one themselves. Everyone has to start somewhere and most places advertised aren’t cheap. However, the majority of what I do, I figured out all by myself… although it wasn’t exactly cheap… but all I mean by that is I do a degree in this field of work so I’m already throwing £9250 down every year to work on the skills I have. This doesn’t however mean I learnt everything from my degree.
I’ve had my own website since I was about 15 years old and its had many updates since then (it was a fashion blog but don’t let me relive that). All of these things I put myself through during COVID meant I was writing content, learning graphic design, creating posts for myself and my mum’s business and realistically I did it all for free.
You’re never going to hit a target if you don’t fire the arrow.
– Me at some point probably
You don’t have to spend thousands of pounds on courses or hours of your time watching webinars for potentially your own business to fail anyway. This is why I will simply never offer a course like this and if I did then it would probably be £5 because everyone wants to learn and make all this money but get discouraged when they think you already have to be rich to be the most successful.
I work a part time job, I’m a full time student and I’ve just started this little business so as you can guess I’m not exactly rolling in it. Which is why I would like to think I am proof and I will be better proof (with time) that you can figure this social media world out on your own.
If I can give two pieces of advice to anyone who is wanting to get into an industry like this one:
1: Reach out to people you already know, my first clients are some of my closest friends who I simply make watermarks for.
2: Be confident. It’s a scary world and people judge, but if they are judging, they are watching, so give them a show.
If you hadn’t already noticed, I tend to not write in a very serious manner. Although I run a business, I write with humour, it makes me seem real to others (at least I think it does) and thats all I want to be. Im only just an adult and I have a long journey to go, but maybe this will convince you to start your journey too.
